Lynmouth

Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway
The "Lynton and Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is the highest and the steepest totally water powered railway in the world..." www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk/.

I popped briefly into Lynmouth for tea on my recent visit to Exmoor, and of course I couldn't resist taking the cliff railway, clanking my way up to Lynton, and back down again.

Lynmouth, with the cliff railway from a distance, and, at the top of the cliff, Lynton.

Lynmouth 2
Lynmouth town. Various gift shops, and a photography studio where you can have your portrait taken in Victorian clothing. From the cannons outside, this pub attracts a rough crowd.

Lynmouth Harbour 2

Reading the terrible news of the Texas flooding in the papers this week, I was reminded of my recent visit to Lynmouth.

Lynmouth 1
Lynmouth, downstream of a river gorge where waters flowing off Exmoor meet, was the site of a terrible flash flood in August 1952. Thirty-four people lost their lives, and most of the town was destroyed.

It's a lovely part of the world! It must be a few years since I was last there, but Lynmouth is always on my list of places to visit in North Devon. The cliff railway is fun to ride too.
