The lane from Dewlish to Milborne St Andrews. It is a very long lane, particularly at the end of a walk. A very long, up-and-down lane to be walking on a muggy May day.
That's a public road in the picture above, not a path! Narrow one track lanes, where you have to reverse into the nearest gateway whenever you meet another vehicle, are pretty common around here.
I'm so sorry! We don't have things like this here. "where you have to reverse into the nearest gateway whenever you meet another vehicle" In the US, I can see where this could result in fistfights or shootouts.
Most of the locals are really polite & there's usually a competition to see who can be the politest, and reverse into a gateway first.
Very occasionally you meet drivers who cannot (or will not) reverse, not for anything. Even if they are already close to a gateway, they make you reverse two hundred metres back up the lane to the next gateway.
But most people who drive regularly along these lanes get to be pretty skilled at reversing, so it's no big deal. And, touch wood, I've never been stuck between two drivers who both refuse to reverse... :)
