West Dorset Holloway 5

'Holloway' comes from the Anglo-Saxon 'hol weg', and refers to a sunken path that has been grooved into the earth over the centuries by the passage of feet, wheels and weather...

Lane to Mappowder 1

5 or 6 degrees C. Another gloomy day. More featureless grey skies. Drizzle, mostly in the air, and now and then falling as light rain. But not much wind - a relief after yesterday's bitter easterly gales - and, as miserable February days go, it was a pleasant one for walking. I left the car on the verge by Folly Farm, and set off to walk along the lane to Mappowder in the Blackmore Vale, Thomas Hardy's Vale of the Little Dairies.

Winterborne Valley 2
Frost on the grass, and ice on the puddles. Grey cloud from horizon to horizon, except in the south, where a halfhearted New Year sunrise was taking place in a small break in the cloud. Bridleway by Pimperne Woods 3

Bright sunshine. A crisp, still morning, perfect for walking, were half of Dorset not still flooded after Thursday's torrential rain. I set off anyway, from Pimperne village, not knowing how far I would get...
