It has been a few years since I last visited Sculpture by the Lakes, and I hadn't realised what a major tourist attraction it has now become. Summer had come back for one day, and the place was teeming with visitors.

The lantern of the 14th century octagon tower of Ely Cathedral.

The octagon was rebuilt by sacrist Alan of Walsingham between 1322 and 1328 after the collapse of the original nave crossing on 22 February 1322. Ely's octagon is considered "one of the wonders of the medieval world". Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner believes the octagon "is a delight from beginning to end for anyone who feels for space as strongly as for construction" and is the "greatest individual achievement of architectural genius at Ely Cathedral"

The last few days have been cold and grey and very still, the sort of weather that makes you want to photograph lakes. So on my day off I headed over to the sculpture park at Pallington Lakes. But the wind had got up overnight, and it was a day of ripples, not reflections.

Still, leaves were falling under the grey sky. The wind was hissing in the reeds. Not a bad day to be walking by the water.
