Sunset on the Heath 1

A bright icy afternoon, frost lingering on the grass, and a thin layer of ice on the puddles. Set off down the farm track to Middlebere, with the setting sun at my back, casting a long shadow. Read more... )

Solstice Woods 2

By the heath, there is a wood of oaks and silver birches. Only a small wood, but the path through it loops and winds so extravagantly that following it is like walking a mizmaze, a ceremonial path that turns and twists around, until you lose all sense of progress or direction, and the point is simply to be walking, in this place, at this moment.

Marsh Gentian 1

October, and the heath is turning sombre. Here and there a little late heather still in bloom, but rusty brown is the dominant colour now. Which makes the sky blue Marsh Gentian flowers even more extraordinary.

August heath

At home, the leaves are already dropping from the birch and the oak trees, autumn come very early due to the drought. And still no prospect of any rain. But down by the marshes, though the paths are unusually dry, summer is lingering. The heather and the dwarf gorse still flowering, and grayling butterflies are still on the wing. A small family of swallows were swooping through the blue sky and above the purple heather, but no signs that the swallows have started to gather yet.

Large Skipper

Late July, and the heath is full of colour. Golden flowers of Dwarf Gorse, and the pink/purple flowers of all the varieties of heather: Ling & Bell Heather, Cross-leaved Heath & Dorset Heath.

Heath 1
A walk across the heath on an overcast morning, with a cold unsummerly west wind blowing. Sun or no sun, the paths are very beautiful in July, lined with purple Bell Heather and golden grasses.

Middlebere 1

A grey drizzly Christmas morning. No wind. Very mild. Took a walk across the heath at Middlebere, out to the edge of the harbour. Read more... )

Marsh Gentian 2

The wind in the east: warm, humid and sinister. Took a walk out to the small patch of marsh at the lonely centre of the heath, where there are often Marsh Gentians flowering at this time of year.

It's starting to feel less like high summer on my morning walks. A chill in the air. Mist lying over the marshes. Geese passing overhead. (I originally typed "overheard". That, too.)

Silver-studded Blue (Plebejus argus).

Still a cold, fresh June. The heather is not yet in flower on the heath, but there are tiny Silver-studded Blue butterflies on the wing.

Silver Birch

It's hard to muster up enthusiasm for a photographic expedition when the weather forecast is for greyness, and drizzle. But I headed out anyway. Motto: it doesn't matter where you walk, as long as you are walking.

I'm not having a good morning. LJ just ate my post. Here we go again...

Speckled Wood

After yesterday's heavy rain, sunshine. Walked through the woods, by the marshes, and back across the heath, along muddy paths overhung with wet grass and bracken.

Some days, none of my photos come out sharp, and nothing's quite in focus. Maybe because my brain's not quite in focus? Today was one of those days.

Photos anyway )

Hairy Piggies on the Heath
A new thing, piggies. They've joined the ponies and cattle turned out on the heath, as part of a rewilding project. I wonder how they get along with with the ponies. (I'm glad I'm not riding on the heath these days. My mare used to object strongly to piggies...)

Photo taken last week. This week I don't think it's going to stop raining...
