Marsh Gentians

The wind in the east: warm, humid and sinister. Took a walk out to the small patch of marsh at the lonely centre of the heath, where there are often Marsh Gentians flowering at this time of year.

A flash of sky-blue among the heathers.

Marsh Gentians (Gentiana pneumonanthe).

The tiny, tiny blue flowers of Heath Milkwort (Polygala serpyllifolia).

Male Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens).
The sky began to darken as I turned to retrace my steps. By the time I got home, thunder was rumbling and the rain had arrived.

Botanical news:
It was reported last week that there had been a confirmed sighting of a Ghost Orchid flowering in the UK. It was last seen flowering in 2009 (a couple of weeks after it had been declared extinct in the UK - evidently it has a sense of humour).
