The heath, late July

Late July, and the heath is full of colour. Golden flowers of Dwarf Gorse, and the pink/purple flowers of all the varieties of heather: Ling & Bell Heather, Cross-leaved Heath & Dorset Heath.






Dwarf Gorse (Ulex minor), pale pink Common Heather or ling (Calluna vulgaris), and the darker pink Bell Heather (Erica cinerea).


Pale pink Cross-leaved Heath (Erica tetralix) and darker pink hybrids with Dorset Heath.


Dorset Heath (Erica ciliaris).


A fringe of red Sundews marking the edges of boggy areas.

Got to make the most of heather season. Another month or so, and the heath will go back to being dark and sinister.

The Forestry Commission have done a lot of heathland restoration round here in the last few years, and the display of heather is amazing right now.

Wildflowers are quite wonderful really! Never seen a sundew in the wild.

The sundews here are mostly very tiny - only a few inches across - but fascinating when you see them in close up.

The heath at its most splendid! Right now it's hard to believe it's the same dark heath I walk in winter...
