Path to nowhere

I had originally planned to head over to Stourhead this weekend, thinking how lovely the lake would look in this grey weather. But I woke up this morning with a sore throat, feeling too feeble to make that long drive north, so instead took a quiet walk out through the forest to the marshes.

The birch trees display their riches carelessly: golden leaves, a drop of silver at the end of every twig. Sooner or later the wind will steal their fortune.

The path beside the marshes. Silent mist-blurred conifers to one side, and nothingness to the other.

It was a good walk. All the dogwalkers were out, and I got to say hello to two happy poodles, a charming little black spaniel, a very enthusiastic vizla, and a very sweet blue-eyed husky.
