Brighton

A few days off work. I was originally planning to go back to the Somerset Levels, but a) the Somerset Levels are currently underwater, and b) my car was making a weird noise. So I took the train to Brighton instead. Brighton was busy. Of course it was busy, it is a city, you fool. And it is surprisingly hard to get a proper pot of tea there. There are coffee shops galore, and shops offering bubble tea & matcha & chai... but I failed to find any old-fashioned tea rooms. Luckily I came across the café upstairs in Waterstones, had a pot of tea surrounded by books, and was saved.

Back home now. Brighton was grand. Grand & crumbling. I think I enjoyed it, despite the lack of tea, and the getting lost (a lot).














I thought the houses on Weymouth seafront were quite grand, but Brighton is grand on a whole different scale.

Wow! This looks like such an amazing oceanfront!

It is really impressive, particularly when the sun comes out - white & cream-painted Regency buildings stretching for miles along the seafront, as far as the eye can see.

I do enjoy the British seaside, although perhaps that is because I grew up in small seaside town? The past-it's-best feel adds to the charm, I think.

Yes, I love the slightly run-down charm of seaside towns, especially out of season.

Not sure Brighton has that sort of melancholy charm? Bits of it are crumbling, but on the whole it seems quite a vibrant, lively place.

Lack of tea in an English seaside town?! What the heck. I hope coffee shops aren't taking over.

I'm terrible at urban navigation - I always get lost in cities. But even if I wasn't quite sure where I was sometimes, I got to see lots of interesting streets and buildings. 😊

There are still a lot of tea rooms in Dorset seaside towns, because Dorset is rather an old-fashioned backwater place, but in the cities, the coffee shops are definitely taking over.

That's a shame. I drink both and so often tea really hits the spot.

Yes. And coffee shops usually make terrible tea. They use the superheated water from the coffee machines, and scald all the taste out of the tealeaves.
