Photography is hard in the summer woods: too much contrast between shadows and sunlight. In the end you've just got to give up trying to get a balance - it makes shots too bland - and let rip with the over-exposure.
Your landscape seems incredibly strange and alien to me. I wish I had travelled more when I was younger - I've never been anywhere with an arid climate, not even to the Mediterranean.
We aren’t arid like Arizona or some parts of Southern California. So you wouldn’t get the desert experience here. Plus the mountains and the offshore current produce some odd effects. For instance, the high temp for us today is supposed to reach 38.33 C. In San Francisco, less than 110 km away, the forecast high is 18.88 C and mostly sunny.
