Silence. (The "statues" at Holme aren't really statues, they're concrete garden ornaments, and this one must have tipped over at some point. Her head has been cemented back on.)

The sun is warm, the wind is bitter, and at Holme the tulips are coming into flower...




The March wind is biting cold, and someone stole her cardie...

Before you even pass through the narrow wooden gate into the gardens, you can smell the hyacinths.




Someone told me what this was last year... but that was a year ago, and I've forgotten.

(I keep reminding myself: You never appreciated spring this much when you lived in California where there is no winter. 😀 )

This winter felt weirdly short. Normally January seems to last a hundred years, but this year it flew by. And I feel a bit cheated. How can I properly appreciate the arrival of the spring flowers when I haven't endured a January that lasted one hundred years?
