Bridehead

This morning, a walk along the Bride Valley from Long Bredy to Little Bredy, to photograph the waterfall at Bridehead.

Long Bredy

A grey day, but very mild. I was hoping the sun would come out, but it never did. Still, at least the rain held off. Unfortunately, my camera hates grey days. Had to discard most of my shots from the walk, as the image quality was pants.

Long Bredy BW
Dilapidated farm buildings at Long Bredy - too small for modern farm machinery, so left to decay.

From Long Bredy, along lanes silver with last night's rain. Leaves falling.

A detour south onto a very soggy byway, to see if I could catch a glimpse of Kingston Russell House, but it was hiding.

A yellow arrow on a gatepost sent me off into muddy fields, where I lost the footpath, and wandered forlornly until I came back to the road.

Through the buttress, the garden of the old rectory.

From the churchyard there's a little path down to the grounds of Bridehead House, where visitors are welcome to walk in return for a donation to the church.

Some sun would have been nice... Oh, well.

All Dorset photographers visit Bridehead and take a long exposure shot of the waterfall. I am no exception. (Though I didn't have a tripod with me, so this was handheld at 1/50s).

Then it was back along the lane, which had grown inexplicably longer for the return journey. Wearily counted off the landmarks: Pitcombe and Whatcombe and Bellamont. But the blowing leaves kept me company.

I have to admit I'm not a big fan of the silky water, very long exposure genre. I prefer a shutter speed just long enough to allow a little blur (totally frozen looks odd) so I usually go with about 1/30th.
