Greenhouse, Kingston Maurward

There's a paper sign taped to the door of the greenhouse at Kingston Maurward, saying visitors are welcome to come in. So I went in...


I don't know what this is. The flowers are seriously huge. I kept expecting hummingbirds to emerge.

Your tall plant with the dangling flowers would be angel's trumpet (Brugmansia), a poisonous plant in the nightshade family and closely related to the shorter Datura (devil's trumpet).

I should have guessed a nightshade from the leaves, but those enormous flowers had me quite bewildered...

You're welcome. I couldn't see the shape of leaves too well in the picture but those dangling trumpet shaped flowers rang a bell. I was thinking Datura (not that I remembered the name until I found it among pictures of big trumpet shaped flowers), but looking at all the varieties and descriptions I concluded you had a picture of angel's trumpet. I'm not sure that I've ever seen either plant in person.

Trumpet flowers, I think? I used to see them a lot in San Diego.

Yes, Angel's Trumpet. I don't think I've ever come across it before - it must be a greenhouse plant in this country. Or maybe it's not widely grown because it is so scarily poisonous?

Yes, I am from San Diego and they look oh so familiar. I remember seeing them a lot around Old Town. :)
