Middlebere

A grey drizzly Christmas morning. No wind. Very mild. Took a walk across the heath at Middlebere, out to the edge of the harbour.
Walkers out and about in their waterproofs and woolly hats (though it was warm enough for the woolly hats to be redundant), greeting each other with a cheerful "Hello! Merry Christmas!" in passing. There is no shortage of people who think Christmas morning is for walking along muddy farm tracks, sitting quietly in bird hides overlooking Poole Harbour, binoculars at the ready, listening to the fluting calls of the wading birds.

Middlebere Heath.

Reedbeds.

Christmas Lunch being served at Middlebere Farm.

View across the harbour inlet, from the birdhide.
Birds seen (all too far away to photograph):
Curlews
Shelducks
Wigeons
Little Egrets
Lapwings
Quite a precious Christmas gift, the sight of Lapwings! When I was a child, the flooded winter fields would be full of Lapwings. And these days they are so rare.

Merry Christmas to everyone who is celebrating! And if it is just another working day, hope it is a peaceful one.
