Exmoor walks: Rockford to Brendon

Old packhorse bridge, Brendon. Exmoor has so many fabulous ancient bridges. You could do a photography tour just of Exmoor bridges.
On my second day on Exmoor, set off once more from the tiny village of Rockford:

Once more across the slightly bouncy footbridge:

But this time I took the riverside path northeastwards. A pleasant path through the green woods, with the river keeping you company. Glimpses of rocks and white water, and of tranquil stretches where the water shines silver. Now and then a grand fishing villa half-seen through the trees.

Nearing Countisbury Mill. The old mill building is now a house, and there are few traces of the old mill workings: just a short stretch of cobbled path, a shallow channel beside the path that might have once been the leat.

From the riverside path, onto the road, and over the bridge into Brendon village.

I had planned to sit a while in the churchyard, but when I got to Brendon and looked at the tourist information board, I found out that Brendon Church wasn't actually in Brendon. It was the other side of Rockford, where I had started out. Most confusing.
But there's a small village green in Brendon outside the village hall, shaded with trees, dotted with wooden benches, and it's a peaceful place to sit a while, listening to the river running.
When I set out, I had half-planned to carry on following the Coleridge Way eastwards to Malmsmead, but in the end decided the distance would be a bit too much for me, and that I would walk back the short distance back to Rockford, and take the car over to Malmsmead instead.

Back along the path to Rockford, with the sun coming out.

I forget which pub it was that we had planned to stop at for lunch - it was either the Rockford Inn or the Staghunters - but I still remember the hungry disappointment when we got there and found the landlord's wife had walked out that morning and Food Was Off! :-D
