Yes, there's quite a fashion for arid gardens here.
Of course, our droughts are nothing like as severe as those in the western U.S., but our rain patterns are not as reliable as they once were. We seem to be having a lot of all-or-nothing weather: no rain for months, then a month's worth of rain all at once. It seems to me that summers are a lot drier than they used to be.
(Now I said this, watch. It will probably rain until September...)
