Boxing Day on Flower's Barrow
Dec. 26th, 2022 01:35 pm
The Army have ceased firing for Christmas, and the walks across the Ranges are open to the public. I made my annual expedition up to Flower's Barrow Iron Age hillfort...
6 degrees C. Bright sunshine. But the climb up to the hillfort was straight into the very sharp teeth of the west wind.

The Ranges.

The safe route across the Ranges marked by yellow posts. The paths churned by machinery brought in to cut the gorse: but it was still possible to pick a way along them.

I didn't take many pictures this year. I take the same walk, and the same pictures, every year. Nothing much changes, except that each year a little more of the hillfort slips into the sea. And this year, there's no dog with me.

The Perilous Pillbox still hanging on.

Worbarrow Bay.
Sat for a while listening to the sea crashing on the shingle far below in the bay, watching the gulls passing. The wind very cold, up on the ramparts. But thanks to C.'s Christmas present this year, I had coffee (scalding hot - I had to ask the west wind to blow on it for me).

Tiny thermos. Just the right size to tuck in one coat pocket.

The path winds its way through the ramparts, then descends to the bay at Arish Mell. But I didn't follow it this year. Instead, turned and retraced my steps, with the icy wind at my back and the sun on my face, and the ravens soaring above me.
