So far, it has been neither a hot nor a sunny August here, but the flowers at Holme give the illusion of a hot, sunny August...















Humming-Bird Hawk-moth.






Someone may have once told me what this is, but the name has not stuck in my brain (which you think it would - it's a very weird plant).

I don't know whether it's climate change, but suddenly the last few summers, I have been seeing so Hummingbird Hawk-moths in local gardens - amazing creatures!

The last bloom looks like something I'd find in a dried flower bouquet. I was thinking some sort of Amaranthus, but no, it's probably a Celosia argentea cristata (cock's comb).

Another mystery solved!

It was planted up with Amaranthus, but it clearly wasn't Amaranthus, so I was scratching my head over that one...

The flowers are doing their best. Meanwhile it is totally grey here with a steady downpour set to continue until it stops (cross fingers) about 3 p.m.

They're not afraid of colour, the gardeners at Holme. And this year it's more welcome than ever.

It wasn't supposed to rain here today. It rained.
