A Second Flush
Aug. 26th, 2023 02:06 pm
August is horrible at work. I come home exhausted, and then spend all night dreaming that I am at work, waking briefly at 2am to realise that I forgot to do something, or did it wrong. (Do you not think you are a little too conscientious, brain? It's not like you are being paid for a 24-hour day.)
And since I was too ill to visit gardens or go out walking last weekend, for the last two weeks it has felt like life is all bread and no roses.
But then the Secret Garden emailed me their monthly newsletter, saying the roses are having a second flush...

The Met Office rather gloomily forecast 50 per cent chance of thundery showers today, so I took my umbrella, which is cumbersome and has some prophylactic qualities (half the time when I lug it round with me, it fails to rain). And though there were anvil clouds along the horizon, the sun shone, and it was warm: summer, still. And the roses were indeed in flower, and so was the salvia and the mint and the lavender in the Arid Garden.

Um. Not all the roses were pale pink. But the bright sunshine made it hard to photograph the brighter coloured roses.

'Henri Delbard'.

'Munstead Wood'.

A mother holding a tiny tot was sitting on the wall of the fountain, and the toddler was reaching out to splash the water with a delighted squeal of "Cold! Cold!"
