December on the Heath

It's hard to muster up enthusiasm for a photographic expedition when the weather forecast is for greyness, and drizzle. But I headed out anyway. Motto: it doesn't matter where you walk, as long as you are walking.



I thought I would park the car in the lane at Middlebere, and walk across Hartland Moor. The little paths through the heather are too marshy to follow at this time of year, so I stuck to the drier route, along a gravel track that follows the line of the old clay-workings railway, then onto a sandy track that runs along the edge of the heath.

The light was flat and grey and boring, and all the landscape photographs I took were also boring. So have a couple of moody pictures of alder trees instead:





I had planned to reward myself for my virtue with a pot of tea and some cakie at the little café at Hartland Stud on the other side of the heath, before walking back.


But, but, but... it's Saturday!

Another plan gone awry. Fortunately I had emergency chocolate supplies in my camera bag, so was able to bear the disappointment. But I wished I had brought along my little pocket thermos. You shouldn't put too much faith in tea rooms at this time of year. (I mean, even if it had been open, it might have playing Christmas muzak...)

I'm trying it out as a motto. It got me outside twice this weekend, even though the weather is not enticing.

What a shame about the tea room being closed, but as you say, there is always the danger of muzak.

I love the sombre colours of the heath in winter. But I think you really need to be a watercolour artist to capture those colours properly. The camera struggles.
