A Christmas Day
Dec. 25th, 2023 10:12 am
Christmas Day. A dawn walk out along an empty beach, accompanied only by grey cloud, grey sea. The slap of small waves against the sand. A scattering of shells and weed along the tideline. My own footprints.
Coming back along the beach, the Christmas crowds began to arrive. A woman swimming. Families meeting up. Happy packs of dogs. A couple trying to take a Christmas photo of two labradors wearing antlers, and the dogs taking it in turn to shake off the antlers just as the photo was being taken.
In the car park, two large horseboxes. Four horses with hunter clips were setting out with their riders towards the beach. The lead horse looked sensible enough, but two of the string were on their toes, carrying their heads way high, and it looked like it might be an exciting ride for those riders. Hope their brakes worked.
