Along the sunken lane
Jan. 1st, 2024 11:57 am
A walk along the underhill path, and back along the sunken lane. Set out in sunshine, which was a novelty, even if it did not last long. Returned in January gloom. At least the rain held off.
The underhill path was muddy, but passable in wellies. The sunken lane was only marginally less muddy.

Along the way, I completed the New Year's Day Botanical Society survey, noting any wild flowers in bloom. Nothing was flowering enthusiastically, but of halfhearted flowers, there were more than I expected:
Dandelion
Daisy
Cat's-ear
Nipplewort
White Deadnettle
Black Horehound
Hogweed
Yarrow
Red Campion

Hedge Bedstraw (Galium mollugo) not in flower, but lining the sunken road with pretty green rosettes.
The sunken lane looking very green for January - there has been no hard frost yet to make the ferns die back for winter:

Delicate leaves of Greater Stitchwort, and Hartstongue fern.
