It reminds me of some of the street scenes in TV series, only with the actual pavement, rather than being covered with dirt. Or snow.

I suppose it would have been cobbled originally, but production companies probably cover the tarmac with dirt to film street scenes there. That's what they did when they were filming here at Corfe Castle.

Yup. That's what I mean. You can see the dirst spread in some of the series--the faintest outline of the curb, for ex. Or the way the dirt is piled against the buildings, that it's been freshly added to age the street.

Stratford on Avon isn't actually that far away, but, confusingly, is on an entirely different River Avon. There are several River Avons in the UK, Avon being the Celtic for "river". Not to be left out, we also have a River Avon in Dorset.
