A cold northwesterly wind blowing this morning, strong enough to steal a person's hat. Not a day to go walking on the high ground. But the ground has dried out enough now for the sheltered path along the foot of the Purbeck Hills to be passable.

A fuzz of green along the Underhill Path, as the hawthorn and the hazel and the dogwood break out into leaf. Chaffinches and blackbirds fluttering along the path in the sunlight. Chiffchaffs and yellowhammers singing.

The path lined with primroses and celandines. Blackthorn in blossom in the hedges.

Decided to head back along the sunken lane, thinking it would be sheltered, but actually the wind was more westerly than I realised, and was being funnelled right up the lane. The wind stole my hat (again).

Still, it was a pleasant walk in the sunlight, the road lined with bright yellow stars - a galaxy of celandine flowers. Ferns unfurling. The bluebells and the stitchwort just coming into flower.

Came down into Corfe village just as a steam train was leaving the station:

Rennes. A guest engine. "Austerity No. WD152 Rennes will be visiting for the [Swanage Railway Spring Steam Gala], which will take place from the 27th March until the 29th March 2026. The locomotive, which was built for the War Department before working at the Longmoor Military Railway, will visit thanks to the Dean Forest Railway." https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2026/01/rennes-steam-locomotive-to-visit-the-swanage-railway.html
Joined the queue for the bakery in the Square - there's always a queue for the bakery on a sunny Saturday - and then sat on the stone steps of the War Memorial to eat my apricot Danish in the company of the village jackdaws, the more daring ones hopping in to steal the crumbs.
