A grey grim week. Cold winds. Rain. The tulips in their pots hanging their heads. The blossom on the neighbour's crab apple tree taking a battering.

But the first cuckoo of the year was calling out in the forest this morning. They're late this year. And along the lanes the trees are bursting into leaf. In damp places, the Alliaria petiolata has shot up a foot in one week.

Think I might be coming down with a cold. Haven't been feeling too great the past few days. But hopefully a quiet weekend, with lots of tea, and maybe some detective mysteries, will provide a cure.

It is rather miserable at the moment. I had thought I'd start mowing the front grass yesterday, but when I stepped out through the front door, it felt distinctly chilly so I decided to wait a few more days.

I hope that you feel better after a quiet weekend with tea and stories.

Thank you! I had a bit of a lie-in this morning, and actually feel a lot better. So maybe I was just over-tired.

And the sun actually appeared briefly when I was out in the forest. Though it's gone again now.

I think I can leave the lawn another week. It's more moss than grass anyway, since it's heavily shaded by oak trees.

The mockingbirds are already singing at 3am (and all the other hours of day and night). I fear this presages a hot summer.

I just searched for mockingbird song again, since I had forgotten what they sound like. Fortunately.

Ouch. I will stop complaining about the (rather quiet, tuneful) robin singing outside my window at 4.30am.

I actually like the mockingbird ever-running ever-changing call -- but not right outside the window at 3am. (That said, the curve-billed thrasher does an even more melodic version, but only sometimes. And never a dark.)

Thank you! I do feel a lot better this morning, so I think I was just over-tired. It was a bit of a relentless week at work.

The forecast doesn't look quite so bad for this weekend, bearing in mind it's a Bank Holiday weekend (and UK Bank Holidays are famed for attracting torrential rain).

You were right! I've just been out on a visit to a walled garden, and it was absolutely scorching - T-shirt and shorts weather.
